Centre for Technology Adoption for Aging in the North (CTAAN)<\/span><\/a>, the National Innovation Hub on tech and aging in northern and rural Communities, is doing vital work to ensure that older adults and caregivers in these communities have access to the latest aging technologies.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Based at the University of Northern British Columbia, CTAAN employs a partnered approach to ensure technologies enable, empower, and engage those aging in the north. Launched in 2020, CTAAN partners with healthcare providers, community organizations, and tech companies to evaluate new technologies and facilitate their real-world implementation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cWe can facilitate the real-world implementation of technologies in a range of settings, at home, assisted living and long-term care,\u201d says Dr.\u202fRichard McAloney, Director of the Centre for Technology Adoption for Aging in the North (CTAAN).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

CTAAN\u2019s unique approach starts by raising awareness about technologies through community outreach. The hub operates a demonstration lab where older adults, caregivers, and healthcare providers can experience and provide feedback on the latest products.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cWe actively engage with communities and interact with older adults, care partners, and health systems leaders across the region, to understand their priorities, opportunities, challenges, and what is most important to them. This helps us understand what\u2019s needed,\u201d said Dr.\u202fShannon Freeman, Academic Director of the Centre for Technology Adoption for Aging in the North (CTAAN).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

CTAAN\u2019s work supports AgeTech SMEs to develop, pilot, implement, and scale AgeTech products. A typical first project with CTAAN begins with one of their participant feedback workshops called, \u201cAgeTech Discussions: Exploring Perspectives on Technology\u201d known as an ADEPT workshop, which opens opportunities for real-world implementation projects.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThere\u2019s usually an extra level of research that needs to be done to get technology to the next level, and that\u2019s where we come in,\u201d explains Dr.\u202fFreeman. This independent evaluation process is crucial for ensuring new technologies meet the unique needs of northern communities. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In October 2024, CTAAN, AltumView and <\/span>The Mount Community<\/span><\/a> on Prince Edward Island were announced in the\u00a0 <\/span>first cohort of collaborative projects<\/a><\/span> to receive a combination of funding expert coaching, and supportive resources through envisAGE.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The project includes AltumView\u2019s privacy-preserving activity monitoring technology focuses on enhanced safety measures and incorporating feedback for adaptive design improvements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As an Innovation Hub, CTAAN will contribute their expertise by gathering data on how these technologies impact aging in place in real-life settings.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

By bridging the gap between AgeTech innovators and end users, CTAAN is helping to ensure that transformative technologies reach the communities that need them most.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
