Innovation Hub profile: SAM3 sensing the way in aging technology
Founded by Carleton University, Bruyère Health and AGE-WELL in November 2017, envisAGE Innovation Hub partner SAM3 (Sensors and Analytics for Monitoring Mobility and Memory) is one of the first Innovation Hubs in Canada’s AgeTech ecosystem.
A multidisciplinary team of experts, comprising engineers, physicians, and occupational therapists, collaborates on a variety of research and innovation projects led by SAM3, under the guidance of Executive Director Dr. Bruce Wallace, who is an expert in signal processing and data analytics. These initiatives are dedicated to empowering older adults to maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle through technologically advanced solutions.
“We’re looking at the holistic view of the older adult and how technology can help meet their needs,” explains Dr. Wallace. “Our focus is on industry-connected research that can move innovations from the lab to the real world.”
SAM3 specializes in technology for older adults aging in place, combining expertise in pressure and force analysis, machine learning, acoustics, video magnification, motion sensing, and electronic noses with vital signs, sleep, gait, activity, cognition, and smart homes assessment. Solutions are co-created with industry, clinical, academic, and older adults and their families to ensure technology’s functionality and to align with the needs of older adults.
Several cutting-edge technologies shaping the future of aging care have been influenced by SAM3‘s expertise, particularly the creation of a revolutionary transfer technology – the ALTA Platform® by Able Innovations. The intelligent and automated device allows a single caregiver to effortlessly and dignifiedly transfer a person between surfaces, such as a bed or CT table, without touching or risking injury to either.
“It’s exciting to see these technologies moving from the lab to the market,” says Dr. Wallace. “Six or seven years ago, these kinds of solutions were still very much in the research phase. Now, we’re able to point people directly to Canadian companies offering real products,” he added.
Looking ahead, SAM3 is focused on addressing some of the key barriers to widespread adoption of aging technologies.
“The goal is to support aging in place, allowing older adults to live independently in the homes and communities they love. With the expertise and partnerships at SAM3, I’m confident we can make a real difference in the lives of older Canadians ,” added Dr. Wallace.
